Luxury Greek Island Hopping — A 10-Day Itinerary

A 10-day luxury Greek island-hopping itinerary covering Santorini, Mykonos, and Crete with hotel picks, dining, and cultural experiences.

Luxury Greek Island Hopping — A 10-Day Itinerary

The Greek islands offer something no other Mediterranean destination can match: the collision of ancient civilization with modern hedonism, set against a landscape of volcanic cliffs, whitewashed villages, and water so blue it looks artificially enhanced. This itinerary traces the essential arc — Santorini's drama, Mykonos's energy, and Crete's depth.

Days 1–3: Santorini — Caldera & Wine Country

Day 1: Arrival in Oia Fly into Thira (JTR) and transfer to Canaves Oia Epitome — the newer, adults-only sibling of the original Canaves with arguably the best infinity pool views on the island. The suites are carved into the caldera cliff, each with a private plunge pool overlooking the volcanic crater.

Settle in with a late lunch at Ammoudi Bay — descend the 300 steps from Oia to the tiny fishing harbor where Dimitris Ammoudi taverna serves grilled octopus and sea urchin with views of the sunset-lit cliffs above.

Day 2: Wine & Ancient Akrotiri Morning visit to Santo Wines or Venetsanos Winery — Santorini's volcanic soil produces Assyrtiko, one of Greece's finest white wines. The caldera-facing tasting terraces are spectacular.

Afternoon: private guided tour of Akrotiri, the "Minoan Pompeii" — a Bronze Age city preserved under volcanic ash for 3,600 years. The frescoes and urban planning are extraordinary. Dinner at Selene, the island's most celebrated restaurant, where Chef Giorgos Hatzigiannakis champions Cycladic ingredients.

Day 3: Black Beach & Transfer Morning at Perivolos black sand beach — rent a daybed at Seaside by Notos for the full beach club experience. Afternoon: helicopter or ferry to Mykonos (helicopter: 20 minutes; high-speed ferry: 2 hours).

Days 4–6: Mykonos — Mediterranean Energy

Day 4: Mykonos Town Check into Cavo Tagoo — the iconic cave-pool hotel overlooking Mykonos Town. The saltwater pool carved into the cliff is one of the most photographed hotel pools in the world.

Explore Mykonos Town (Chora) in the late afternoon when the cruise-ship crowds thin. Walk the Matoyianni Street boutiques, visit the Paraportiani Church, and photograph Little Venice at golden hour. Dinner at Nobu Matsuhisa or, for something more authentic, Kounelas fish taverna in the old port.

Day 5: Beach Clubs & Delos Morning excursion to Delos — the sacred island birthplace of Apollo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site accessible by boat from the old port. The marble lions, ancient theaters, and mosaic floors are remarkable. Return by noon.

Afternoon: Scorpios beach club on Paraga Beach — the bohemian-luxe atmosphere, live DJ sets, and Mediterranean mezze make it the island's most sophisticated daytime destination. Alternatively, Principote on Panormos Beach for a more upscale experience.

Day 6: East Coast & Transfer Rent a private boat for the day and explore the east coast — Lia Beach (the quietest swimming), Super Paradise (the most famous), and Agrari (the locals' secret). Lunch aboard with chilled rosé.

Evening ferry or flight to Heraklion, Crete (45-minute flight or 2.5-hour fast ferry).

Days 7–10: Crete — Ancient Depth

Day 7: Elounda & Arrival Check into Blue Palace, a Luxury Collection Resort in Elounda — or, for ultimate exclusivity, Elounda Peninsula All Suite Hotel. The views across Mirabello Bay to the Spinalonga fortress island are cinematic.

Afternoon: boat trip to Spinalonga, the former Venetian fortress and leper colony — a hauntingly beautiful island with extraordinary history. Dinner at the hotel overlooking the illuminated bay.

Day 8: Knossos & Heraklion Private guided tour of Knossos — the legendary palace of King Minos and the Minotaur's labyrinth. The restoration is controversial among archaeologists but the site is essential for understanding Minoan civilization. Follow with the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, which houses the original Knossos frescoes.

Lunch in Heraklion's market district — seek out Peskesi for authentic Cretan cuisine prepared from ancient recipes using ingredients from their own farm. Afternoon drive back along the coastal road.

Day 9: Samaria Gorge or South Coast Option A: Hike the Samaria Gorge (13 km, 5–7 hours) — Europe's longest gorge, descending from the White Mountains to the Libyan Sea. Private transfers can be arranged from the exit point at Agia Roumeli.
