CHIVE Sea Bar & Lounge Savannah Review

CHIVE Sea Bar & Lounge Savannah review: stunning dining room, exceptional Chilean Sea Bass, but a forgotten birthday celebration overshadowed the evening.

Savannah is a city where unforgettable memories are created around the dinner table. From historic restaurants tucked beneath Spanish moss to modern culinary destinations redefining Lowcountry cuisine, every meal becomes part of the story. During our recent stay, one restaurant had been circled on our itinerary for weeks—CHIVE Sea Bar & Lounge.

Located just steps from Savannah's famous City Market, CHIVE immediately stands apart from the city's more traditional restaurants. Rather than embracing rustic Southern charm, it offers a contemporary, upscale atmosphere filled with rich colors, elegant lighting, and a sophisticated menu centered around seafood and refined cuisine.

This dinner wasn't simply another restaurant reservation.

It was planned as the centerpiece of my wife Miriam's 45th birthday celebration.

I had reached out ahead of time to ensure the evening would be special, hoping for one of those small moments—a birthday acknowledgment, perhaps a celebratory dessert, or simply a heartfelt "Happy Birthday"—that transforms dinner into a lifelong memory.

Unfortunately, despite all of the advance planning, that moment never came.

First Impressions Walking into CHIVE immediately impresses.

The dining room feels intimate yet luxurious. Deep sapphire velvet curtains frame the restaurant while warm amber lighting reflects beautifully off polished marble tabletops. Crystal chandeliers cast a soft glow over the lounge seating, and the illuminated bar becomes the centerpiece of the room.

  • It's elegant without feeling pretentious.
  • Modern without sacrificing warmth.
  • Comfortable enough for a relaxed dinner while sophisticated enough for anniversaries, birthdays, and celebrations.
  • Simply put, CHIVE is one of the most visually stunning dining rooms we visited in Savannah. For travelers seeking an upscale evening beyond the traditional Southern dining experience, the atmosphere alone makes CHIVE worth considering.

    Atmosphere Rating: ★★★★★ (5/5)

Cocktails Our evening began with handcrafted cocktails, including an excellent Blood Orange Martini, while the restaurant graciously provided a complimentary celebratory flute upon arrival.

The cocktail menu complements the upscale atmosphere perfectly, featuring creative offerings that pair well with seafood while maintaining an approachable style.

  • Presentation was beautiful.
  • Balance was excellent.
  • It was an enjoyable start to what we hoped would become a memorable evening.

The Food CHIVE's menu focuses heavily on fresh seafood with subtle international influences. From oysters and lobster to Chilean Sea Bass and duck breast, there is something for nearly every seafood lover. Throughout the evening, presentation remained consistently impressive — every plate arrived looking as though it belonged in a luxury travel magazine.

Lobster Spring Rolls Our appetizer featured the Lobster Spring Rolls. Golden brown with an excellent crunch, they were served alongside a sweet chili dipping sauce that complemented the delicate lobster filling.

While flavorful, we found ourselves wanting a bit more lobster inside to truly justify the premium price. Still, they made for an enjoyable beginning to dinner.

Halibut The Halibut entrée was nicely prepared with a delicate texture and fresh seasonal vegetables. The fish remained moist and flaky while allowing its natural flavor to shine.

  • Simple.
  • Clean.
  • Well executed.
  • Chilean Sea Bass The standout dish of the evening was undoubtedly the Chilean Sea Bass. Perfectly caramelized on the exterior while remaining buttery and tender inside, it rested atop a creamy risotto that added richness without overwhelming the fish itself.

Every bite demonstrated careful preparation and quality ingredients. This was easily the highlight of the meal and one we would happily recommend.

Service Our server was friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive throughout dinner.

  • Water glasses remained full.
  • Cocktails arrived promptly.
  • Food pacing was comfortable.
  • Questions about the menu were answered confidently.
  • Throughout the meal, we felt welcomed and well cared for. However, hospitality is measured by more than timely service and accurate orders. It's measured by attention to the moments guests remember long after the plates have been cleared.

Unfortunately, that is where our experience changed.

The Disappointment That Changed the Evening Prior to our reservation, I had specifically planned this dinner around my wife's 45th birthday. Like many husbands, I wanted the evening to be special.

Anyone who has been married understands the amount of planning that goes into milestone celebrations. You make reservations weeks ahead, communicate with the restaurant, coordinate surprises, and hope everything comes together perfectly.

When we arrived, however, there was no acknowledgment of the birthday whatsoever.

  • No greeting.
