Punta del Este is a resort city in Uruguay, situated on a narrow peninsula that separates the Río de la Plata from the Atlantic Ocean. Known as a premier destination for affluent South American and international travellers, it is characterised by its extensive beaches, yacht harbour, and upscale residential areas. The city's social life centres around its two distinct coastlines: the calmer 'Mansa' beach on the bay side and the ocean-facing 'Brava' beach, known for its waves. It offers a combination of city amenities and relaxed coastal living.
This is the city's central hub, bordered by both Mansa and Brava beaches. It contains the main commercial street, Avenida Gorlero, the marina, and numerous high-rise apartments, offering direct access to restaurants and shops.
Located east of the main city, across the Maldonado Stream, this area is known for its bohemian-chic atmosphere. It features art galleries, boutiques, and a vibrant nightlife, with access to popular beaches like Montoya and Bikini.
A former fishing village situated further east along the coast, José Ignacio has evolved into an exclusive and tranquil enclave. It is noted for its rustic-luxe style, wide beaches, and a more discreet, low-key social scene.
Located in nearby Punta Ballena, this expansive, white-stuccoed structure was the former home and workshop of artist Carlos Páez Vilaró. The building, which contains a museum and hotel, is known for its distinctive architecture and views of the sunset over the water.
This large-scale sculpture of five fingers emerging from the sand is a well-known city landmark. Created by Chilean artist Mario Irarrázabal, it is situated on Parada 1 of Playa Brava and is a popular site for photographs.

Many international visitors arrive via Montevideo's Carrasco International Airport (MVD), from which private transfers and rental cars are the standard options for the journey to Punta del Este.
The official currency is the Uruguayan Peso (UYU), although US dollars are widely accepted in many hotels, restaurants, and shops in this tourist area. Major credit cards are also accepted in most establishments.
Playa Mansa ('Tame Beach') is on the western, Río de la Plata side of the peninsula, offering calm waters suitable for swimming. Playa Brava ('Fierce Beach') is on the eastern, Atlantic Ocean side and has stronger waves, making it popular for surfing.
Renting a car or arranging a private driver allows for convenient travel to areas like La Barra and José Ignacio, as well as to more remote beaches and countryside estates.
