An editorial analysis of Turkish Airlines and Qatar Airways Business Class, focusing on the QSuite vs the new Crystal and Diamond cabin configurations.
The landscape of Business Class travel has shifted significantly over the last decade, moving from simple reclining chairs to what many now consider 'First Class Lite.' In this space, Turkish Airlines and Qatar Airways compete fiercely for dominance across the Eurasian and African networks. At Peters Signature Travel, we have spent countless hours evaluating these cabins to determine which truly serves the needs of the executive traveler and the leisure seeker alike.
Qatar Airways reset the industry standard with the introduction of the QSuite. This product is a marvel of industrial design, offering a fully enclosed door, a 1-2-1 configuration, and the unique ability to create a 'quad' for families or colleagues traveling together. The materials are heavy and luxurious, utilizing slate-grey fabrics and burgundy leather. It is difficult to find fault with a seat that provides this much personal real estate and privacy.
Turkish Airlines has recently introduced its 'Crystal' Business Class suite on its newest aircraft, a significant upgrade from its older 2-2-2 layouts. The Crystal product features high privacy walls and direct aisle access, catching up to the standards set by Gulf carriers. While the older Turkish 777 fleet still lacks some privacy, the space provided for the footwell is often wider than that of Qatar. We recommend checking the aircraft type meticulously: when flying the 787-9 or A350-900, Turkish Airlines offers a competitive, modern cocoon. When flying the QSuite, however, Qatar Airways retains a slight edge in sheer privacy.
It is here that Turkish Airlines often surpasses its rivals. The airline takes immense pride in its catering, provided by Turkish DO & CO. The experience typically begins with a selection of appetizers from a trolley, allowing guests to see the freshness of the seafood and local cheeses before choosing. The grilled octopus and traditional Turkish lamb dishes are prepared with a level of char and seasoning usually absent in pressurized cabins.
Qatar Airways remains the leader in flexibility. Their dine-on-demand service is as robust in Business Class as it is in First. The menu is a curated blend of Qatari specialties and international staples. Their wine program is equally impressive, featuring a rotating selection of boutique champagnes. While Turkish Airlines focuses on the 'event' of the meal—multiple courses served with flair—Qatar focuses on the 'autonomy' of the meal, allowing the traveler to dictate the pace of their own schedule.
For our clients who travel for commerce, the ability to remain connected is paramount. Both airlines offer varying degrees of Wi-Fi connectivity. Qatar Airways’ 'Super Wi-Fi' is notably consistent, offering speeds that allow for seamless video conferencing over most of their network. Turkish Airlines has made substantial investments in their connectivity, and for 'Miles&Smiles' members, they often provide generous data packages. The workspace in a QSuite is slightly more ergonomic, with more expansive side tables for laptops and documents, whereas Turkish Airlines' newer seats prioritize comfort during rest.
Qatar Airways partners with Diptyque for its amenity kits, providing a scent profile that is instantly recognizable and deeply sophisticated. Their pajamas, provided by The White Company, are frequent favorites among our team. Turkish Airlines partners with brands like Ferragamo, offering elegant leather pouches and high-quality skincare. Turkish also provides an impressive range of pillows and blankets that turn the seat into a truly inviting bed. We find that while Qatar provides better loungewear, Turkish Airlines provides a slightly more 'boutique' feel to their soft goods.
If your priority is a private room in the sky where you can work and sleep in total isolation, Qatar Airways and the QSuite remain the gold standard. If, however, you view the flight as an extension of your holiday—an opportunity to indulge in world-class gastronomy and warm, attentive service—Turkish Airlines provides an experience that is hard to match for its sheer sense of occasion.
