Our in-depth review of Cathay Pacific's The Pier First Class Lounge at HKG, an oasis of residential luxury and quietude.
Arrival at Hong Kong International Airport often brings with it a sense of frenetic energy. However, once you descend the escalator to The Pier, Cathay Pacific’s flagship First Class lounge located near Gate 63, the world changes. The design, spearheaded by Studioilse, eschews the typical glass-and-chrome aesthetic of aviation in favor of a warm, residential palette. It is a space that doesn't demand your attention; it invites your relaxation.
The materials used throughout The Pier—onyx, cherry wood, and bronze—were chosen for their ability to age gracefully. There is no bright, artificial overhead lighting. Instead, the lounge is bathed in the warm glow of floor lamps and integrated task lighting. The scent of the lounge, a bespoke blend of green tea and jasmine, is subtly piped through the air, immediately lowering the heart rate of the weary traveler.
The Dining Room is the heart of the experience. It is a full-service restaurant with an à la carte menu that bridges the gap between East and West. Our team highly recommends the Dan Dan mian, which is arguably the best version of the dish available in any airport. The service is attentive but never intrusive. For those arriving in the morning, the traditional Chinese breakfast is a masterclass in comfort and execution. The wine list is equally impressive, featuring a curated selection of Champagnes and fine Bordeaux that change seasonally.
What truly sets The Pier apart from its global contemporaries are the Day Suites. These are eight private nooks, each with a daybed, a desk, and a curtain for privacy. They provide a direct view of the runway and the distant hills of Lantau Island. It is perhaps the most peaceful place to work or sleep in an airport setting. Paired with a complimentary 15-minute foot massage at the Retreat, the experience is restorative in a way that feels essential rather than merely indulgent.
For those who prefer a more social environment, the Bar offers a wide range of cocktails and high-end spirits in a horseshoe-shaped setting with plush velvet seating. If you are in a rush, The Pantry provides a high-end 'grab and go' selection of artisanal cheeses, pastries, and cold cuts, all presented on marble counters. It is this attention to the various needs of the traveler—from the one with five hours to the one with twenty minutes—that makes The Pier so successful.
The Pier is not the largest lounge in the world, nor is it the most technologically advanced. Its greatness lies in its humanity. It feels like a beautiful home managed by someone with impeccable taste. For the frequent traveler through Asia, it remains a mandatory pilgrimage.
