Our team compares the industry-leading Qatar Qsuite with Etihad's Business Studio. Find out which Gulf carrier wins the business class war.
In the competitive landscape of Gulf aviation, the distinction between business and first class has blurred. This is largely due to the innovations of Qatar Airways and Etihad Airways. At Peters Signature Travel, guests are often asked if the 'World's Best Business Class' title belongs to the Qsuite or if Etihad’s refined Business Studio offers a more practical luxury.
Qatar Airways’ Qsuite is, by most metrics, a first-class product sold at a business-class price point. It features floor-to-ceiling sliding doors, making it the first business class of its kind. The 'quad' configuration allows families or colleagues traveling together to combine four suites into a single social space. For the solo traveler, the suite offers a level of privacy that was previously unimaginable. The materials—burgundy leathers, rose gold accents, and high-quality fabrics—create an atmosphere of deep indulgence.
Etihad’s Business Studio, found on their 787 Dreamliners and A350s, takes a more minimalist approach. The seats are arranged in a dovetail configuration, with some facing forward and others backward. While it may lack the high doors of the Qsuite (on older aircraft), the design is incredibly clever in its use of space. The newer A350 fleet does, however, introduce sliding doors, bringing it closer to the Qsuite standard. Etihad’s aesthetic is 'Abu Dhabi sophisticated'—think neutral tones, soft lighting, and the 'Acqua di Parma' amenity kits which signify a quiet, high-end lifestyle.
For our clients, the cabin is often an office. Qatar Airways generally offers 'Super Wi-Fi' which is remarkably consistent over long stretches of the ocean. The table in the Qsuite is large and sturdy, perfect for those who need to work through a flight. Etihad also provides high-quality connectivity, and we find their seat controls to be slightly more intuitive, utilizing a dedicated touchscreen for all functions including lighting and seat firmness.
Qatar Airways’ business class dining is legendary. It is entirely 'on demand', meaning you can eat anything from the menu at any time. The presentation is impeccable, with individual bread baskets and candle-like lamps. Etihad also utilizes an 'on demand' system, and it has been found their Middle Eastern dishes to be particularly authentic and flavorful. However, Qatar’s wine list and the variety of their non-alcoholic 'mocktails' give them a slight edge for those who enjoy a diverse beverage program.
If privacy is your primary concern, the Qatar Qsuite is difficult to beat. It remains the most complete business class product in the sky today. That said, Etihad offers a highly refined, less 'busy' experience that many of our clients prefer for shorter long-haul flights where the spectacle of the Qsuite might feel overwhelming. For the ultimate in modern business travel, the Qsuite remains the benchmark.
