Luxury Costa Rica Guide 2026: Hotels, Costs & When to Go
Complete luxury guide to Costa Rica: where to stay, what a trip costs, the best time to visit, and the experiences worth your time.
The Ultimate Luxury Travel Guide to Costa Rica
We believe in transparency about pricing — not because luxury travel should be defined by its cost, but because informed travelers make better decisions. What follows is an honest assessment of what a genuinely luxurious trip to Costa Rica requires financially, drawn from our team's direct experience rather than published rate cards.
The figures below reflect current market conditions and assume a standard of accommodation and experience consistent with our editorial recommendations. Budget-conscious alternatives exist, but they fall outside the scope of this guide.
Accommodation
Ultra-Luxury (The Top Tier) The finest hotels in Costa Rica — the properties we return to and recommend without reservation — typically command between $800 and $2,500 per night for a premium room or junior suite. The best suites at these properties range from $3,000 to $15,000 per night, with presidential and signature suites occasionally exceeding $20,000.
These rates often include breakfast, and the best properties bundle additional value: airport transfers, spa credits, dining credits, and experience access that can meaningfully offset the headline number.
Luxury (Excellent Quality) Properties in the next tier — still exceptional by any reasonable standard — range from $400 to $800 per night. At this level, you sacrifice little in terms of room quality and service, though the intangibles (location premium, brand cachet, exclusivity) begin to differentiate.
Our Advice on Value The best value in Costa Rica is rarely the lowest price. It is the property that delivers the most meaningful experience relative to its cost. We have stayed at $500-per-night hotels that outperformed $2,000 alternatives, and vice versa. The relationship between price and quality, at this level, is not linear.
Dining
Fine dining in Costa Rica ranges from $150 to $500 per person for a multi-course experience with wine pairing. The most celebrated restaurants may exceed this, particularly when rare vintages are involved.
Lunch offers significantly better value. Many of the same kitchens that command $400 per person at dinner serve comparable quality at lunch for $80 to $150. Our team has made a practice of reserving our most ambitious dining for midday and keeping evenings more measured.
Daily Dining Budget For a couple traveling at the level it is recommended, anticipate $300 to $800 per day for all meals, including coffee, casual lunches, and one significant dining experience. This assumes moderate wine consumption and excludes exceptional bottles.
Experiences and Activities
Premium Experiences: $200–$2,000+ per person Private tours, helicopter transfers, yacht charters, and bespoke cultural experiences fall into this range. A private guided excursion typically costs $300 to $600 per person, while more elaborate arrangements — private island access, exclusive venue hire — can reach five figures.
Standard Activities: $50–$200 per person Spa treatments, group excursions, museum access, and cultural performances. These represent excellent value and form the connective tissue of a well-planned itinerary.
Transportation
Airport Transfers Private transfers range from $100 to $500 depending on distance and vehicle class. Helicopter transfers, where available, typically cost $1,500 to $5,000.
Daily Transportation A private car with driver — our preferred option for maximum flexibility — costs $300 to $600 per day. Ride services and taxis are available at lower price points but sacrifice the continuity and local knowledge that a dedicated driver provides.
