Best Luxury Destinations by Month: Where to Go When
A month-by-month guide to the world's best luxury destinations — optimal weather, peak experiences, and recommended stays for every season.
Where to Go When — The Best Luxury Destinations for Every Month of the Year
Timing is the most underrated element of luxury travel. The right destination in the right month transforms a good trip into a transcendent one. This guide maps optimal luxury experiences to every month of the calendar.
January: Maldives & St. Barths Maldives — Peak dry season. Crystal visibility for diving, calm seas for water sports, and the northeast monsoon delivers consistent sunshine. The best month for overwater villa experiences. St. Barths — The Caribbean's most glamorous island peaks in January. Yacht-lined Gustavia harbor, New Year's spillover energy, and perfect 28°C days. Book by September for peak-season availability.
February: New Zealand & Patagonia New Zealand — Late summer perfection. Queenstown adventure luxury, Waiheke Island wine country, and Milford Sound at its most dramatic. The light in February is golden and long. Patagonia — Peak hiking season. Torres del Paine in February offers 16 hours of daylight and (relatively) calm winds. Explora Patagonia and Awasi Patagonia deliver luxury in the wilderness.
March: Japan & Morocco Japan — Cherry blossom season (late March through mid-April) transforms the country. Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka bloom in sequence. Book ryokans 6+ months ahead — the best sell out for hanami season. Morocco — Ideal temperatures before summer heat. Marrakech riads, Atlas Mountains trekking, and Sahara glamping at Scarabeo Camp. Royal Mansour and Amanjena are at their finest.
April: Italy & Bhutan Italy — Shoulder season magic. Rome without crowds, Amalfi before peak pricing, Lake Como's gardens in full bloom. Easter in Rome is a profound experience. Hotel Caruso and Grand Hotel Tremezzo are open and gorgeous. Bhutan — Spring rhododendron season in the valleys. Clear Himalayan skies for mountain views. The Paro and Punakha valleys are stunning, and Amankora properties are available without peak-season premiums.
May: Greece & Safari (Tanzania) Greece — The sweet spot. Warm enough for swimming, cool enough for sightseeing, and mercifully free of July-August crowds. Santorini, Mykonos, and Crete are at their best. Tanzania — Calving season on the Serengeti. Two million wildebeest with newborn calves, predator action at its peak, and green-season rates at premium lodges like Singita and &Beyond.
June: Iceland & French Riviera Iceland — Midnight sun. 24 hours of daylight for exploring the Golden Circle, whale watching in Húsavík, and the highland interior. The Retreat at Blue Lagoon and Deplar Farm are extraordinary. French Riviera — Before the August invasion. Cannes Film Festival energy lingering, Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc pool at its most glamorous, and the Mediterranean at swimming temperature.
July: Amalfi Coast & Canadian Rockies Amalfi Coast — Yes, it's busy. But July on the Amalfi Coast, with the right hotel and a private boat, is Italian summer at its most intoxicating. Evening passeggiata in Positano, limoncello on a terrace, the scent of jasmine and sea salt. Canadian Rockies — Banff, Lake Louise, and Jasper in peak summer. Fairmont properties are the luxury standard. Helicopter heli-hiking, grizzly bear watching, and turquoise glacier lakes.
August: Scandinavia & Montana Scandinavia — Stockholm archipelago sailing, Norwegian fjord cruises, and Copenhagen's culinary scene (Noma, Geranium). Long warm days and outdoor dining culture at its peak. Montana — The Lodge at Paws Up for glamping, fly-fishing on the Blackfoot River, and ranch experiences. American West luxury at its most authentic.
September: Bordeaux & Bali Bordeaux — Harvest season. Private château visits during vendange, barrel-tasting at first-growth estates, and the countryside golden with vine leaves. Les Sources de Caudalie for wine-therapy spa. Bali — Dry season perfection. Ubud rice terraces are luminous green, Uluwatu surf is consistent, and the temples are mystical at dawn. Mandapa and Bulgari are at their best.
October: Safari (Kenya) & Portugal Kenya — The great wildebeest migration reaches the Maasai Mara. River crossings, big cat activity, and the short rains beginning to green the landscape. Angama Mara's views over the Great Rift Valley are unmatched. Portugal — Late-season warmth on the Algarve coast, Lisbon's cultural calendar in full swing, and Douro Valley harvest. São Lourenço do Barrocal in the Alentejo is exquisite.
